New York — The iconic skyline of New York City was ablaze with red, white, and blue on the Fourth of July, as the 48th annual Macy’s Fireworks display lit up the Hudson River. For the first time in a decade, the grand fireworks show took place over the Hudson, with the West Side of Manhattan providing the prime viewing spots.
Five barges stationed on the Hudson between West 14th Street and West 34th Street will set off an array of fireworks reaching up to 1,000 feet in the air.
The West Side Highway, stretching from Christopher to Washington streets, was packed to capacity well over two hours before the fireworks began, highlighting the high demand for this year’s event. The impressive display was complemented by a simultaneous show in Jersey City, presented by the renowned Fireworks by Grucci, which started just five minutes after Macy’s.
In addition to the spectacular fireworks, the day featured a variety of parades, concerts, and festivities throughout the city, celebrating Independence Day with the vibrancy and energy New York City is known for.
The NYPD said its members will be out in full force as thousands head into Manhattan for the Macy’s Fourth of July Fireworks show.
“We’ve been preparing for this since July 5th of 2023,” Chief of Department Jeffrey Maddrey said. “You will see some of the assets, like uniformed members in the street, you’ll see our K-9 deployments, some of our counterterrorism deployment.
You’ll see members at our entry points doing soft screenings, making sure people are not bringing in anything that’s unauthorized. And of course, there’ll be security measures that you won’t see.”
