Two men recently arrested in Coney Island are accused of a brutal rape that occurred under the Riegelmann Boardwalk on yesterday. The suspects, Daniel Davon-Bonilla, 24, and Leovando Moreno, 37, are both recent arrivals to the United States, according to police sources.
The attack took place around 8:45 a.m. when Davon-Bonilla, originally from Nicaragua, allegedly assaulted a 46-year-old homeless woman. He reportedly tackled her to the ground, held a knife to her neck, and raped her. When the woman’s boyfriend, a 34-year-old man, tried to help her, Moreno, who is from Mexico, allegedly struck him with a pipe.
Suspects left David Davon-Bonilla, 24, right Leovando Moreno, 37.
The NYPD officers from the 60th Precinct apprehended the suspects nearby shortly after the attack. The victim was rushed to Coney Island Hospital for treatment, while her boyfriend declined medical assistance.
Davon-Bonilla is charged with rape, sexual abuse, assault, menacing, and weapon possession. Moreno faces charges of assault and weapon possession.
This incident is part of a concerning rise in sexual violence in the area. According to recent CompStat data, the 60th Precinct had 11 reported rape cases up to August 11, 2024, more than double the number recorded during the same period in 2023. Reports of other sex crimes have also seen a slight increase.
Authorities revealed that Davon-Bonilla had recently been released after serving a year in jail for a previous sexual assault at a shelter in 2023.
